As the setting of countless Grimm Brothers' fairy tales, the Black Forest happily plays up to its image as a land of cuckoo clocks, cherry gateaux, outlandish traditional garb, hefty half-timbered farmhouses and hill upon hill of dark evergreen forests.

But even brief exploration soon reveals more of the character of a region that's part of the state of Baden-Wurttemberg but was shaped as much by its history as a long-disputed borderland between Germany, France and Switzerland - and where something of each is in evidence.

The Schwarzwald (Black Forest) comprises a swathe of deep-green woodland draped across the granite and Sandstone Mountains of Baden-Wurttemberg in south-west Germany. The forested slopes and shady valleys once gave rise to legends about mysterious beasts, wicked witches and enigmatic lake nymphs, and provided the setting for many of Grimm's fairy tales. Today, the woods and hills are celebrated for their unspoilt beauty.

Triberg is famous for Germany's highest waterfalls, which have an overall drop of 163 metres over 7 cascades. You can visit the Black Forest Folk Museum, visit the many cuckoo clock shops, feed the red squirrels by the waterfall and much more. After lunch we then head for Hornberg to see the world's largest cuckoo clock house. Then onto Gutach to visit the Black Forest open air museum for a guided tour (45mins). This is then followed by a Black Forest gateau demonstration to include coffee and cake. We then return back to the hotel to relax before dinner.

Today is a free day for you to do as you will. Take advantage of the facilities in the hotel or explore the town of Bad Durrheim.

Day 5: Titisee & Boat Cruise

Today we head for the beautiful town of Titisee. Lake Titisee was formed during the last Ice Age. Just 10,000 years ago, a glacier extended from the Feldberg to the present-day lake. The basins gouged out by the glacier and the terminal moraine now forms the basin of Lake Titisee. The lake is 850m above sea level, 2km long, just under 1km wide and approx. 40m deep. A pollution free lake where the boats are powered by electric motors. We will have a boat cruise on the lake. This wonderful town with its many shops, cafes and restaurants is a sight to behold. Full of charm and splendour. Why not try the real Black Forest Gateaux, you can't beat originality. Before we return back to the hotel, we make a short stop at the charming little village of Hollsteig, which has a clock museum, little shops, hotels and it's by the Stags Leap rock. It is a Bronze statue of a stag that was being hunted many years ago and took a mighty leap across the valley to freedom.

Day 6: City of Freiburg

Today we travel to the city of Freiburg, the capital of the Black Forest. Also known as a wine town, Freiburg is surrounded by fertile vineyards. Explore the culture of the city and visit the Freiburg's Munster; a gothic minster cathedral constructed of red sandstone, built between 1200 and 1530. Around the cathedral is the Munsterplatz or Cathedral Square, Freiburg's largest square. A farmers' market takes place here every day with locals selling their produce and goods. Feel free to wander round and buy anything that takes your fancy. Later this afternoon we return back to the hotel to relax before dinner.
