Sidmouth is a town in Devon. It is a gateway to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. A large part of the town has been designated a conservation area. Sidmouth lies on the Jurassic Coast, and the coastline is dominated by the vivid red sandstone cliffs, which date back to the Triassic period. Along the front is the Millennium Walkway, which stretches the length of the beach and is made of pebbles, providing the perfect backdrop for an afternoon stroll. Sidmouth Beach is a family-friendly beach, ideal for safe swimming and rock pooling at low tide. Sidmouth sits in the middle of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is surrounded by spectacular scenery and vistas. The landscape is a wonderful mix of wooded combs, heathland and hilltops. A short distance away from Sidmouth, overlooking the town from the top of a steep hill, you will find the dramatic heathland of Mutters Moor, the haunt of the elusive nightjar. Take some time to explore the town centre, rich in royal and architectural history, as well as discover a great range of shops, cafes and restaurants. The resort was very fashionable in the 1800's and was visited by Queen Victoria in her youth as well as the Grand Duchess of Russia in 1831. Sidmouth is home to hundreds of listed buildings, and a liberal sprinkling of blue plaques can be found around the town.
