Grange is a pretty resort with an Edwardian flavour and a mild climate. It is on the shores of Morecambe Bay, and from the 13th century until the 1850's, the major route from Lancaster was across the sands. In 1887, the coming of the Furness Railway encouraged the growth of Grange from a small hamlet to the town we see today. The town developed in the Victorian era from a small fishing village, and the arrival of the railway made it a popular seaside resort on the north side of Morecambe Bay, across the sands from Morecambe. The River Kent used to flow past the town's mile-long promenade but its course migrated south, away from Grange. The sands or mudflats with dangerous quicksands became a grass meadow now grazed by small flocks of sheep. The clock tower in Grange-over-Sands was put up in 1912, in the style of Manchester architect Edgar Wood, with diagonal buttresses, a small band of bell-openings, and a short octagonal spire.

Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Depart Local Area
After boarding your luxury coach, we make our way north to the Lake District. We will make comfort stops en-route and stop for lunch. We will continue our journey to arrive at The Cumbria Grand Hotel in Grange-over-Sands. Welcome tea/coffee is on arrival.
Day 2: The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway
At the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway travel back in time when you climb aboard the train. A distant memory of bygone years for some and new experience for others, it's a unique day out for all. Jump aboard the train at Haverthwaite Station. Enjoy views from your carriage up to Lakeside; the southern tip of Lake Windermere. Then continue your journey by boat aboard a Windermere Steamer to Bowness. You cruise around the south of Lake Windermere with fantastic views across the wooded shoreline and distant Lakeland fells. Time to explore in Bowness before we then head back to the hotel for dinner.
Day 3: Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway Journey
After breakfast we head off to Ravenglass for a train journey. The journey takes 80 minutes return from Ravenglass to Dalegarth and back. The cosy covered and open top carriages provide the best of comfort and views as you travel up the line. The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway was originally built way back in 1873 and was commercially opened on the 24th May 1875. The Railway's main purpose was to transport iron ore that was being mined in the hills above the village of Boot, down to Ravenglass where it could be transferred onto the Furness Railway's mainline to Barrow. The Railway was also open to passenger traffic (beginning in 1876) and was built to the narrow gauge of 3ft (between the rails); this made the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway the first public narrow-gauge railway in England!
After a great day we then will head back to our hotel for dinner.
Day 4: Holker Hall & Gardens
After breakfast we head for Holker Hall, dating back to the early 1600's. Holker Hall has been home to the Preston, Lowther and Cavendish families. The estate has passed by inheritance through the family line and is a wonderful example of the magnificent neo-Elizabethan Gothic style, yet at the same time with all the space and charm of a Victorian stately home. The dramatic formal gardens welcome you with displays of colour and interest. From there, winding paths take you through the collection of rare and exotic plants and trees. Highlights along the way are the Cascade and Burlington Fountain, the Sunken Garden, Pagen Grove, and the 400-year-old veteran lime tree, the Holker Great Lime, voted one of Britain's grandest trees with its girth at over 8 metres. Holker is home to the National Collection of Styracaceae, seen flowering through early summer. There is a cafe, gift shop and farm shop on site.
Day 5: Journey Home
After breakfast and cases have been loaded on to the coach, it is time to wave goodbye to our hosts at The Cumbria Grand Hotel and head for home. There will be comfort stops en-route, and you should be back in your local area by early evening.
