The Black Forest has provided the setting for countless Brothers Grimm fairy tales. It happily plays up to its image as a land of cuckoo clocks, cherry gateaux, traditional dress, half-timbered farmhouses and endless dark evergreen forests. However, even a brief visit reveals much more. The region forms part of Baden-Wurttemberg in south-west Germany and has been shaped by its location close to France and Switzerland. Influences from all three countries can still be seen today. Known in German as the Schwarzwald, the Black Forest is a vast area of deep-green woodland spread across granite and sandstone mountains. Its forested slopes and shady valleys once inspired legends of mysterious beasts, wicked witches and lake nymphs. Today, the region is celebrated for its unspoilt scenery, peaceful villages, walking trails and beautiful mountain landscapes.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1. Depart Local Area

After boarding your luxury coach, we make our way to Dover for our morning ferry crossing to Calais. We travel through France with comfort stops, to the city of Reims and our Campanile Hotel where we shall spend our first night with dinner, bed and breakfast.

Day 2. Black Forest

After an early breakfast we continue our journey south through the Vosges Mountains to the beautiful medieval town of Kaysersberg for lunch. Departing after lunch, we head into the Black Forest and the beautiful village of Titisee, and the Maritim Hotel where we will spend the next five nights with dinner, bed and breakfast.

Day 3. Day at Leisure

Today is free to explore Titisee. Lake Titisee was formed during the last ice age. Just 10,000 years ago, a glacier extended from the Feldberg to the present-day lake. The basins gouged out by the glacier and the terminal moraine now forms the basin of Lake Titisee. The lake is 850m above sea level, 2km long, just under 1km wide and approx. 40m deep. The lake remains pollution free as the boats are powered by electric motors. This wonderful town, with its many shops, cafes and restaurants, is a sight to behold. Full of charm and splendour. Why not try the real Black Forest Gateaux, you can't beat the original!

Day 4. Triberg

Today we will take a trip to the lovely town of Triberg, which is in the centre of the Black Forest. Triberg is famous for Germany's highest waterfall, which has an overall drop of 163 metres over 7 cascades. You can visit the Black Forest Folk Museum or visit the many cuckoo clock shops, feed the red squirrels by the waterfall and much more. Returning to the hotel to relax before dinner.

Day 5. Freiburg

After breakfast we depart for Freiburg, often regarded as the gateway to the Black Forest. Also known as a wine town, Freiburg is surrounded by fertile vineyards. Explore the city's culture and visit Freiburg Minster, a striking Gothic cathedral built from red sandstone between 1200 and 1530. It stands in Munsterplatz, Freiburg's largest square, which is surrounded by historic buildings, cafes and market stalls. A farmers market takes place here every day with locals selling their produce and goods. Feel free to wander round and buy anything that takes your fancy. We return to the hotel to relax before dinner.

Day 6. Black Forest Open-Air Museum

This morning we head for Hornburgh to see the world's largest cuckoo clock house, then onto Gutach to visit the Black Forest open-air museum for a guided tour (45mins). This is then followed by a Black Forest gateau demonstration to include coffee and cake. Free time to visit the rest of the museum. We then return to the hotel to relax before dinner.
