Monschau will take your breath away; it is a delightful town nestling in the hilly forests located directly on the Eifel. What gives it its charm are the narrow streets lined with half-timbered houses, In fact, it's looking not too different from how it did a few centuries ago which is exactly what gives this place its eternal charm.
Monschau is close to the Belgium border. And the Rur River, cuts through part of the old town. With a watermill near the Markt (market square). Overlooking the town is the medieval castle, most of which are in ruins and now a youth hostel. Parts of the ramparts and many defensive towers can be seen everywhere around town.
In the centre of town, is the Rote Haus ('red house'), an enormous Baroque townhouse that belonged to a local noble family. Four of the eight levels can be visited, and are indeed quite sumptuous. There is also a glassworks at the end of town, which can be visited.
