As the setting of countless Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales, the Black Forest happily plays up to its image as a land of cuckoo clocks, cherry gateaux, outlandish traditional garb, hefty half-timbered farmhouses and hill upon hill of dark evergreen forest. But even brief exploration soon reveals more of the character of a region that’s part of the state of Baden-Wurttemberg but was shaped as much by its history as a long-disputed borderland between Germany, France and Switzerland - and where something of each is in evidence.

The Schwarzwald (Black Forest) comprises a swathe of deep-green woodland draped across the granite and Sandstone Mountains of Baden-Württemberg in south-west Germany. The forested slopes and shady valleys once gave rise to legends about mysterious beasts, wicked witches and enigmatic lake nymphs, and provided the setting for many of Grimm's fairy tales. Today, the woods and hills are celebrated for their unspoilt beauty.

Day 2: Arrive Bad Durrheim

After breakfast we travel across the border into Germany and arrive at the Waldeck Spa Resort where we spend the next 4 nights. On arrival we will be welcomed with a glass of Sekt and a short film about the history of the hotel while our cases are taken to our rooms. After a long day travelling we can relax before dinner.

Day 3: Freiburg/Triberg (Weather Dependent)

After breakfast we depart for Freiburg, the capital of the Black Forest. Also known as a wine town, Freiburg is surrounded by fertile vineyards. Explore the culture of the city and visit the Freiburg's Münster, a gothic minster cathedral constructed of red sandstone, built between 1200 and 1530. Around the Cathedral in the Münsterplatz or Cathedral Square is Freiburg's largest square. A farmers' market takes place here every day with locals selling their produce and goods. Feel free to wander round and buy anything that takes your fancy. We return back to the hotel relaxing before dinner.

In the case of bad weather
After breakfast we depart the hotel to take a short trip to the lovely town of Triberg which is located in the centre of the Black Forest. Triberg is famous for Germany's highest waterfalls, which have an overall drop of 163 metres over 7 cascades. You can visit the Black Forest Folk Museum or visit the many Cuckoo clock shops, feed the red squirrels by the waterfall and much more. Returning back to the hotel to relax before dinner.

Day 4: Schaffhausen and the Mighty Rheinfalls and Stein am Rhein

Today we head to Schaffhausen, a mediaeval old town considered one of the prettiest in Switzerland. Located on the Upper Rhine between the Black Forest and Lake Constance, the popular holiday destination is surrounded by vineyards setting the romantic scene. The houses are richly decorated with oriel windows and lavishly painted facades and some date back to the Gothic and Baroque times. The Munot Fortress that looms over the town can be seen for miles and is full of history. Appreciate the silence as the town is a traffic free zone. You will have free time to explore this beautiful town. We then make our way to the mighty Rheinfalls, Europe’s largest waterfall. In the middle of the waterfall stands a mighty rock, where you can stand and observe the natural flow of the water. Feel the roar and vibration of the water over your body. We then take a short drive by the river and visit the small and charming town of Stein am Rhein. The famous well preserved Old Town features painted facades and half-timbered houses. One of the best preserved Medieval monasteries and Hohenklingen Castle brings to life the colourful history of Stein am Rhein. After you have looked around we return back to the hotel to relax before dinner.

Day 5: Lake Constance

After breakfast we head to Lake Constance, at the northern foot of the Alps situated in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. This is the only area in Europe where there are no borders between the different countries. Measuring 64km long and 12km at the widest point, Lake Constance is the third largest lake in Central Europe. The pretty little towns and picturesque townships including Arbon and Gottlieben dotted around the lake make it one of Europe’s most beautiful lakes. The gently undulating landscape around the lake adds to the spectacular views as well as the Romanshorn boat harbour. Boat trips are available around the lake if you wish. You are free to do as you please and appreciate the views. After a full day here we return back to the hotel to relax before dinner.
